FOLEY, Ala. - Malouf Furniture put the finishing touches on a major expansion project that created one of the largest Gulf Coast furniture stores between New Orleans and Tampa Bay.

The 90,000-square-foot complex is now more than double the size of the original store that opened here five years ago. The grand opening event was held on July 16 with a full slate of consumer seminars and presentations, a raffle to benefit Habitat for Humanity and an evening gala attended by friends, vendors and community leaders.

The expanded store, which serves the Gulf Coast communities from Destin, Fla., to Biloxi, Miss., and beyond, features a dramatic art gallery with original works from local and international painters; a dazzling home-theater room outfitted by Malouf's electronics partner, Avid Electronics; a staffed coffee shop and two fully decorated condominium vignettes.

The condo presentations, called Condos-To-Go, reflect the dramatic growth taking place along the Emerald Coast, where high-rise condominiums and other investment resort properties are going up faster than owners of existing buildings can repair the damage from Hurricane Ivan last year. The store also includes a drapery display, a rug gallery, sleep center and an extensive patio furniture presentation.


Gardner Malouf, president, said the goal for the store is to provide turnkey decorating solutions for area residents and investors who recognize quality and appreciate comfort. Malouf Furniture, which also has a store in Greenwood, Miss., addresses middle price points and higher with vendors such as American Leather, AU, Broyhill, Century, Henredon, Rowe, Shermag, Taylor King, Wesley Hall, Lane and Serta.

During two years of planning and construction, Cliff Zeber of Altered Spaces, a store planning firm, consulted on the design of the new showroom and assisted with many of the vignette installations. "One of our main goals was to create an interactive space in which customers are immersed in the home decorating experience," Zeber said. "The key is the enthusiasm that Gardner and his staff have for fresh ideas, and now their customers have so many beautiful spaces to consider, each of them appealing to different esthetic senses."

"We wanted to create a place where it's exciting to shop, a store that you can visit over and over and always come away with new ideas for making your home more beautiful or functional," Malouf said. "Our look will always be fresh, and our people provide expert advice and service. That's a great combination for our customers."

Have you heard the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"? Thank goodness Malouf Furniture & Design ignored it. The already great establishment enters its sixth year of business with the addition of 60,000 square feet, bringing their total showroom space to 90,000 square feet of furniture and accessories.

The expansion is about 18 months in the making, according to owner Gardner Malouf. "I visited different stores in Atlanta and on the East Coast, and I brought back ideas that we could incorporate into our new addition. Not just ideas about products or displays, but ideas about what improves the entire shopping experience." It's about more than just square footage, Malouf explains. "We're very excited about the expansion because it represents not just more space but a whole new approach to our business."

The new showroom space includes numerous full galleries, making Malouf Furniture & Design a complete source for many items. "For example, we have always carried leather, but now we will have a specific leather gallery," Malouf says. "Our rug gallery will have probably 400 rugs on display." Malouf will be doing the same with lighting, original art, mattresses and outdoor furniture and accessories, something he says will continue to set the furniture store apart from local competitors. "These galleries make our store very unique; not many furniture stores have an actual art gallery within, but that's what we have."

The store will also contain three truly novel features, Malouf explains, that enhance the scope of services and products the store offers. The media room contains three levels of theater seating and boasts a 110-inch screen display (provided by Avid Home Systems), theater lighting and first-class audio equipment. A full coffee shop (courtesy of Dizzy Bean Coffee Shop) will also be included. For condominium owners, Malouf Furniture & Design offers "Condos to Go," price-sensitive complete packages for two- and three-bedroom units. Even these displays will be in keeping with the rest of the new showroom. "We have actually built two condos in the store as part of the display," Malouf explains. "This will have great appeal to condo owners who need to quickly furnish their property."

Gardner Malouf, the third generation in this family business that began with a small store in Greenwood, Mississippi, says three things separate a good store from a great store. "First, you can offer a wider variety of cutting edge products. You can offer first class customer service, something we pride ourselves on. Finally," he notes, "what you display to the customers can be designed to best create the ultimate shopping experience. That's all there is to it."

The expanded showroom at Malouf Furniture & Design is set to open mid-March, with a formal grand opening planned for later this spring.

Malouf's Derek Capsis Artwork Selected Press Release Date: February 2005 Title: Derek Capsis Balloon Artwork Selected Location: Foley, Alabama 2005 Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival Selects Artwork of Malouf's Derek Capsis The committee that has been planning the first ever Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival had a difficult task in selecting the official artwork for the 2005 festival. Close to 20 pieces of art were submitted, each piece very unique and colorful. Malouf Furniture's own Derek Capsis created the piece selected for this year's festival. Capsis is a well-known local commercial artist/illustrator, fine artist, and teacher in addition to his work as a Customer Service & Repair Technician for Malouf Furniture and Design. His design, which shows several balloons floating over a lush coastal waterscape, was chosen in part because it showcased the South Baldwin County landscape so well. In addition to the 2005 Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival poster, Capsis has also designed several Mardi Gras posters for the Mississippi Mystic Society, three National Shrimp Festival posters and three Heritage Harbor Days posters.
